Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland Resigns
Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced her resignation on Monday, following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision not to renew his confidence in her.
In her resignation statement posted on her X account, Freeland wrote: "During our conversation on Friday, you informed me that you no longer wished for me to continue as Finance Minister and offered me another position in the government."
Freeland emphasized that discussions between her and Trudeau centered around policies related to responding to potential tariffs threatened by elected U.S. President Donald Trump. These tariffs include a 25% duty on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with China.
Trump recently pledged to impose tariffs of 25% on all imports from Mexico and Canada and 10% on Chinese imports, effective from his inauguration on January 20.
Freeland concluded her statement by expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the government and the Canadian people, indicating her desire to run again in the upcoming federal elections as a representative for the city of Toronto.
