Monkeypox update: Spain's cases rise to 84, Canada confirms 16

The number of confirmed monkeypox cases in Spain rose to 84 on Thursday (May 26) after the country's Ministry of Health reported another 25 new cases. At the same time, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has confirmed 16 cases of monkeypox in the country.

In Spain, those infected are all suffering from "mild symptoms" and are currently isolating in their homes in line with the established protocols, the ministry said.

The majority of the cases have been reported in the Madrid region, but other cases have also been confirmed in the Canary Islands, the Basque Region and Andalusia.

While in Canada, all the cases have been reported in the province of Quebec, PHAC said in a statement, adding that samples are being received for confirmatory testing from multiple jurisdictions.

According to the statement, cases of monkeypox are being identified and treated by local health clinics.

Spanish Health Minister Carolina Darias Wednesday (May 25) that the country would buy monkeypox vaccines and anti-viral treatments as part of the European Union joint purchase.

And in Canada, there is ongoing planning with provinces and territories to provide access to approved vaccines  that, if required, can be used in managing monkeypox in their jurisdiction.

It should be noted that Monkeypox is a sylvatic zoonosis that may cause infections in humans and the disease usually occurs in forested parts of Central and West Africa.

According to the World Health Organization, it is caused by the monkeypox virus which belongs to the orthopoxvirus family.
