Office of the Syrian Journalists Association in the capital, Damascus
In historic and unprecedented move, the Syrian Journalists Association announced the opening of an office in the Syrian capital, Damascus. This opening comes as part of efforts to strengthen professional presence and advocate for journalists' rights in the country, particularly following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
The association published a statement saying: "The Syrian Journalists Association is pleased to announce the opening of its new office in the capital, Damascus, in a step aimed at enhancing its presence within Syria and serving journalists from the heart of the event."
The statement added that Bassam Safar has been appointed as the office director to lead efforts in establishing the values of transparency and journalistic professionalism, which are fundamental to the association's vision and message.
It is noteworthy that the Syrian Journalists Association is an independent professional organization established in 2012, dedicated to defending the rights of Syrian journalists, developing their professional capabilities, monitoring violations of press freedom, and contributing to the promotion of democracy and freedom of expression. The association aims to be a umbrella for all Syrian journalists and works to empower media to be a voice for truth and justice, committed to the principles of integrity and objectivity in all its activities.
This opening comes at a time when Syria is witnessing political and media changes, reflecting the need for an institutional framework that allows journalists to work effectively and transparently. The office is expected to play a pivotal role in revitalizing independent electronic and print journalism, alongside providing training and technical and media support to journalists.
On Sunday (December 8, 2024), the Syrian opposition forces announced their entry into the capital Damascus without significant resistance, confirming their complete control over the city.
