Germany: Life Imprisonment for Syrian Who Supported the Assad Regime...

A German court in Stuttgart sentenced a former Syrian fighter to life imprisonment on Tuesday after convicting him of crimes against humanity committed during his time fighting with a pro-Shia militia supporting Bashar Assad's regime.

According to the court's ruling, the convicted individual participated in acts of killing and torture, targeting Sunni residents in the city of Bosra al-Sham in Daraa Governorate, in an attempt to intimidate them and force them to leave the city. The court based its decision on testimonies from around 30 witnesses during the trial.

The court found that the convict joined the pro-regime militia shortly after the outbreak of popular protests in Syria in 2011, and participated in executing several sectarian crimes.

This conviction follows a similar ruling three years ago against Anwar R., a former Syrian intelligence officer, who was convicted in 2022 of supervising the killing of 27 detainees and torturing about 4,000 others at the Khalid Branch in Damascus between 2011 and 2012. That trial was described as a historic precedent in holding those involved in abuses within Syrian prisons accountable.
