European Union: We Will Intensify Our Direct Communications with the New Regime in Syria
رئيسة المفوضية الأوروبية أورسولا فون دير لايين

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the upcoming phase will be crucial for shaping a new Syria, announcing Europe’s readiness to intensify its communications with the new government.

Von der Leyen explained that there have been encouraging steps from the Syrian regime, despite the existence of issues that still need clarification. She highlighted the importance of a peaceful transition that includes all segments of society and called for a reconsideration of certain sanctions to facilitate reconstruction and ensure the voluntary return of refugees.

In this context, Western diplomatic activity towards Damascus has begun in preparation for engagement with the new government. British diplomats have conducted talks with Ahmad al-Shara, known as "Abu Muhammad al-Julani," while a report from the German Foreign Ministry indicated that German diplomats will start conversations with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.

The Special Envoy for Syria, Jean-François Guéant, emphasized France’s readiness to support Syrians during the transitional phase, as new communications with the authorities in Damascus commence.
