Sisi Emphasizes the Importance of a Ceasefire in Gaza
السيسي وماكرون

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi emphasized on Monday the necessity of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the reconstruction of the area without displacing its residents, reaffirming Cairo's support for Syria and Lebanon.

In a press conference with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, Sisi stated, "The ceasefire in Gaza must stop immediately, allowing for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid and the release of hostages."

Sisi noted the agreement with Macron to reject any calls for the displacement of Palestinians from their land, presenting plans for the reconstruction and recovery of the region. He added, "We agreed to coordinate joint efforts regarding the conference for the reconstruction of Gaza, which Egypt intends to host as soon as the ceasefire is in place."

The Egyptian president affirmed that "achieving stability and lasting peace in the Middle East will remain elusive unless a just settlement to the Palestinian issue is reached and the Palestinian people continue to face the ravages of wars that destroy their foundations."

Sisi also addressed the significance of reviving the peace process, highlighting the need to establish a Palestinian state based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Regarding the passage of ships through the Suez Canal, Sisi stated, "We confirmed our commitment to restoring normal traffic levels and avoiding the need for ships to alter their routes." He explained that these changes were a result of attacks on ships in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait due to the war in Gaza, causing losses to Egypt amounting to $7 billion in canal revenues for 2024.

In reference to Syria, he stressed the importance of maintaining the country's unity and territorial integrity, and the necessity for a political process that includes broad participation from the Syrian people. He also addressed the need to end the Israeli occupation of Syrian territories.

Additionally, Sisi expressed support for Lebanon, emphasizing the importance of the stability of the Lebanese government and the need for all parties to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and Resolution 1701 without selectivity.

The Egyptian president concluded by underscoring the importance of achieving security and stability in Sudan and the African Sahel countries.
