Preparing for a Russian Attack: Germany Takes Necessary Measures
ألمانيا وروسيا

Germany is preparing plans to build new underground bomb-proof shelters amidst increasing warnings of a potential Russian attack in the coming years. Ralf Tiesler, head of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, emphasized Germany's urgent need to face the current conflict reality, stating the country is not adequately equipped to handle the threats.

In an interview with the "Süddeutsche Zeitung," Tiesler stressed the national effort required to identify and utilize tunnels, subway stations, and basements as protective shelters capable of accommodating one million people quickly. He pointed out the pressing timeline, as building new shelters would require significant time and cost.

Meanwhile, Anette Linnigk Emden, head of the Federal Office for Military Procurement, underscored the importance of equipping the German army with all necessary equipment by 2028, to counter any potential threat from Russia. This is based on assessments suggesting Russia might be capable of launching large-scale attacks by 2029.

In light of these challenges, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is focusing on rearming the military to become Europe's strongest conventional force. This comes after a prolonged reliance on U.S. power within NATO, with relations under the former administration of President Donald Trump being tested.

These developments arise amidst rapidly changing geopolitical dynamics prompted by the Russian-Ukrainian war since February 2022, making the accelerated update of German defense systems an urgent necessity.
