Defense Secretary's Statements Confirm Importance of US Role in Preventing Extremist Organizations' Resurgence in Syria After Recent Political Changes
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the necessity of continuing the American military presence in Syria, warning about the risk of ISIS's return after recent political changes in the country.
Austin, in statements to Associated Press from Ramstein Air Base in Germany, explained that "ISIS fighters will return to the mainstream if Syria is left unprotected", highlighting the importance of the American role in protecting detention camps.
The statements revealed the presence of 8 to 10 thousand ISIS fighters in detention camps, including two thousand classified as highly dangerous, necessitating continued American military presence.
Austin unveiled the actual number of US forces in Syria at 2,000 soldiers, compared to the previously announced 900, confirming these forces were deployed since 2015 to confront the terrorist organization's expansion.
Security experts affirm that continued US military presence is crucial during the transitional phase, calling for developing a security system preventing extremist organizations' return and ensuring liberated areas' stability.
