Russian Strikes Target Kurakhov Dam in Eastern Ukraine.. Flooding Fears Rise
-
The risks to residents near the Vovcha River highlight an escalating pattern of using civilian facilities as military targets
Russian airstrikes targeted a water facility in eastern Ukraine, resulting in dam damage and a notable rise in river water levels, amid warnings of possible flooding in surrounding areas, according to a local official on Monday.
The regional official posted on Telegram: "The Russians have damaged the Kurakhov reservoir dam," warning that "the military operation could pose a risk to residents in areas adjacent to the Vovcha River in Donetsk, Dnipro, and Petrovsk regions."
He explained that the water level in the waterway near the village of Velyka Novosilka "has risen by 1.2 meters, though the area has not recorded any flooding so far."
The targeted reservoir is located near the town of Kurakhov, adjacent to an area that has seen Russian forces advance from the eastern axis in recent weeks.
In June 2023, a giant dam in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine partially collapsed, causing floods to flow into the Dnipro River course and submerging dozens of neighboring villages.
Kyiv accuses Moscow of blowing up the dam to obstruct its subsequent failed summer counteroffensive, while Russia blames Ukraine for destroying the dam. The dam disaster resulted in dozens of deaths from flooding, in addition to severe environmental losses in southern Ukraine.
