Iran: No Direct Contacts with the New Government in Syria
إيران

Ismail Baqaei, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, stated that there are no direct communications with the current regime in Syria. Baqaei explained that Iran's involvement in Syria aimed to hinder the advance of ISIS and combat the spread of terrorism in the region.

In his statements, Baqaei mentioned that efforts had been made to advance the political processes in Syria, noting previous communications with certain factions that ended Bashar al-Assad's rule, but he confirmed that there are no direct contacts with the current government.

In a related context, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei addressed the recent developments in Syria, which led to the fall of the Assad regime, a key ally of Iran in the region. Khamenei explained that the factions that overthrew Assad's rule comprised a "group of rebels" who exploited internal weaknesses and took advantage of foreign government planning, resulting in widespread chaos in the country.

It’s worth mentioning that the "Military Operations Command" led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham launched a swift and surprise attack in late November, managing to seize several cities in a short period, culminating in the capture of Damascus on December 8, marking the end of over half a century of Assad family rule.

Simultaneously, as Bashar al-Assad left Syria heading to Russia, Iranian forces and Tehran-backed militias withdrew in coordination with Moscow. In his first comment after Assad's fall, the Russian president stated that 4,000 Iranian elements had been moved out of Syria.

Iran emphasizes that its military presence in Syria has been advisory, based on a request from the "legitimate regime" in the country. In a speech delivered on Sunday, the Iranian Supreme Leader expressed his hopes for the emergence of a "brave and honorable force" in Syria, stressing the need for Syrian youth to confront chaos planners with courage, stating that they have nothing to lose under the current circumstances, as their schools, universities, and homes have become unsafe.
