Berlin Pushes Europe to List Revolutionary Guard as Terrorist Organization
-
The German Foreign Minister's move indicates growing European concern about Iranian Revolutionary Guard activities outside Iran's borders and its threats to opponents
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock pushed on Thursday for the European Union to classify Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, in a new escalatory move against Tehran.
The German call comes in the context of escalating Western moves against Revolutionary Guard activities outside Iran, with the United States having previously listed it as a terrorist organization in 2019.
Canada emerged as the latest Western country to join the front against the Revolutionary Guard, after monitoring operations targeting Iranian opponents on its territory through assassination and kidnapping plots.
The German position reflects growing European fears about the expansion of Revolutionary Guard activity beyond Iran's borders, especially in light of increasing operations targeting Iranian opponents in Western countries.
Baerbock's call coincides with escalating tensions between Tehran and the West over accusations that the Revolutionary Guard is carrying out operations outside Iran that threaten the security of Western countries and their citizens.
