Moscow Mobilizes 59,000 Troops to Regain Control of Kursk

The decline in Ukrainian control in Kursk indicates Kyiv's failed strategy to reduce pressure on its eastern fronts by opening a front inside Russia
A Ukrainian military official revealed that Russia has successfully recovered more than 60% of the territory it lost in Kursk province during Ukraine's surprise attack last August.
A commanding source in the Ukrainian army explained that his country's forces lost about 40% of the areas they had carved out from Russia's Kursk province in August, due to successive Russian attacks.
The source, belonging to the Ukrainian General Staff, revealed that Moscow has mobilized about 59,000 fighters in the Kursk region since Ukrainian forces invaded and rapidly penetrated the area, two and a half years after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
The source reported: "We controlled approximately 1,376 square kilometers at maximum, and now this area has significantly decreased as the enemy intensifies its counterattacks," according to Reuters. He added: "We currently control an area of about 800 square kilometers only, and we will maintain it as long as it remains militarily viable."
The Ukrainian incursion into Kursk represents the first ground invasion by a foreign force inside Russian territory since World War II, which came as a shock to Moscow.
Kyiv's forces breached Kursk in an effort to stop Russian attacks in eastern and northeastern Ukraine, force Russia to gradually withdraw its advancing forces in the east, and strengthen Kyiv's negotiating position in any future peace talks.
Despite the Ukrainian challenge, Russian forces continue their rapid advance in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
