Bader Foundation for Community Development organized an interactive activity about "Distinguishing Between Hate Speech and Freedom of Expression: Form and Language" today, Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at its headquarters in Qamishli city, with the participation of twenty activists from civil society and those interested in public affairs.

The activity's first axis included reviewing several key terms including: characterizing hate speech and distinguishing it from freedom of expression, and the role of media in confronting it. In the second axis, participants reviewed the characteristics of hate speech, criteria for identifying it, its patterns, and related linguistic manifestations.

Participants emphasized the need to organize specialized events and meetings about hate speech and freedom of expression in the current phase that Syria is going through, especially after the increase of this discourse and its negative repercussions on social and civil cohesion, highlighting the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of hate speech proliferation in media platforms and social media sites.

According to sociology experts, these initiatives contribute to promoting coexistence and protecting the diverse social fabric in northeastern Syria, emphasizing that the success of the democratic experience requires balancing between freedom of expression and combating hate speech.

This workshop falls within a series of activities implemented by civil society organizations in the Autonomous Administration areas, aimed at promoting dialogue culture, tolerance, and rejection of violence and extremism, within the framework of building a decentralized model that respects pluralism and preserves rights and freedoms.
