Putin Confirms Support for Syria in Message to Transitional President in Damascus
-
Continued communication between Moscow and Damascus reflects Russia's desire to strengthen its influence in Syria, especially amid political transformations following the fall of the Assad regime

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message to the interim Syrian transitional President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, confirming Moscow's support for efforts to enhance stability in Syria, indicating his country's readiness to strengthen practical cooperation with Damascus in multiple areas.
According to what was reported by the Russian news agency "TASS" on Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified that Putin emphasized "Russia's commitment to developing cooperative relations with the Syrian leadership on various bilateral issues, seeking to strengthen the historical ties between the two countries."
The Kremlin stated in a previous statement during March that Russia supports a united and stable Syria, emphasizing that any disturbance there "could negatively reflect on the stability of the entire Middle East region."
This message comes after the first phone call between Putin and Al-Sharaa last February, during which the Russian President affirmed his country's commitment to supporting Syria's unity and sovereignty, expressing Moscow's readiness to provide economic and humanitarian assistance to the transitional government.
At that time, Al-Sharaa expressed his great appreciation for the strategic relations linking Damascus with Moscow, confirming that the continued Russian support contributes mainly to achieving stability and advancing development in the country.
According to Russian sources, Moscow seeks to expand its presence in Syria by supporting the temporary Syrian caretaker government in various sectors, particularly in security and economic aspects, reflecting its continued interest in the Syrian scene.
It is worth noting that Russia, which has two main military bases in Syria, was one of the most prominent international allies of the previous regime, providing it with political and military support until the moment of its collapse and its flight to Moscow last December.
