Iran Threatens to Escalate Ahead of the "IAEA Board of Governors" Meeting

On Friday, Iran, through Foreign Minister Hossein Abbas Araghchi, warned European countries against making a "strategic mistake" during the upcoming meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors. This warning comes after diplomatic sources confirmed that Western countries plan to propose a resolution against Tehran.

Abbas Araghchi wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Instead of engaging in good faith, the European trio (Germany, France, and the United Kingdom) has chosen to act maliciously against Iran at the IAEA Board of Governors.” He added: “Mark my words, Iran will respond strongly to any violation of its rights.”

Sources told AFP on Thursday that the three European countries, along with the United States—who are parties to the 2015 nuclear deal—intend to submit a resolution against Iran and threaten to refer its file to the United Nations.

According to an informed diplomatic source, a decision will be presented following an IAEA report that emphasizes Iran’s "insufficient cooperation," with Iran being reminded of its nuclear obligations, and an effort to increase pressure on Tehran.

Abbas Araghchi , stressed that Iran has consistently "maintained good cooperation with the IAEA," which previously led to a resolution that closed the chapter on unfounded claims about a possible military dimension to Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.

He pointed out that Iran is once again being accused of "non-cooperation," attributing this to "baseless and politicized reports."

Last week, the IAEA issued a report criticizing Iran's "less than satisfactory" cooperation, noting an acceleration in the production of highly enriched uranium. Iran also accused Israel of providing "unreliable and misleading information" to the agency and threatened to respond if Europeans exploited the report for political purposes.
