Military operations reveal Tel Aviv's concerns about advanced weapons falling into opposition groups' hands

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than 100 Israeli airstrikes on Monday, targeting various military sites in Syria, including the Scientific Research Center in Barzeh, Damascus.
The Observatory's director, Rami Abdulrahman, told AFP that Israeli strikes exceeded 100, suggesting that Israel aims to destroy Syrian military capabilities following Bashar al-Assad's fall from power and escape.
Israel notified the UN Security Council of taking "limited and temporary measures" in the demilitarized zone on Syria's border to counter potential threats.
The US State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, emphasized that Israel's presence in the Syrian Golan demilitarized zone must be "temporary," affirming Washington's commitment to full compliance with the disengagement agreement.
Two Syrian security sources reported that major air bases were hit by Israeli strikes, resulting in infrastructure destruction and dozens of military aircraft losses.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced his army's intention to destroy heavy strategic weapons in Syria, including surface-to-air missiles, air defense systems, and various missiles.
A senior Israeli official revealed that airstrikes would continue in the coming days, while Foreign Minister Gideon Saar noted the targeting of strategic and chemical weapons to prevent them from falling into extremists' hands.
Israeli forces began removing landmines and establishing new barriers on the occupied Golan borders with Syria's demilitarized zone since October.
The Israeli army deployed ground forces to the buffer zone, which spans 400 square kilometers and was established under the 1974 Disengagement Agreement under UNDOF supervision. The Israeli army released footage of its special forces in the Syrian Mount Hermon area.
