Germany Seeks to Accelerate the Return of Refugees

The "Migrants News" website reported that the new governing coalition in Germany aims to expedite the repatriation of Syrian and Afghan refugees whose asylum requests have been rejected or who have lost their right to asylum.

The German Ministry of the Interior confirmed that these efforts include the return of Syrians convicted of serious crimes, in collaboration with Austria. For his part, parliamentarian Lars Castellochi clarified that the cancellation of the Interior Minister's visit to Syria reflects the fragility of the security situation there, but he emphasized the importance of continuing deportation operations without imposing a new ban to avoid sending false signals to Syrians.

A spokesman for the Interior Minister indicated that Germany and Austria are working hard to repatriate convicted Syrian citizens to their home country as soon as possible. The former minister, Nancy Faeser, was supposed to discuss the issue of refugee returns with the Syrian government had her trip not been canceled.

In his comments, Castellochi noted that the situation in Syria is far from calm, with an increase in attacks on the Alawite community. Nevertheless, he affirmed that the cancellation of the visit does not change the government's stance on returns, although it complicates matters.

In this context, Hans-Eckhard Sommer, director of the migration and asylum department in Germany, called for the abolition of the currently applicable individual right to asylum, suggesting it be replaced with organized humanitarian reception and monitoring operations. Sommer explained during a speech at the "Konrad Adenauer" Foundation that bringing refugees by air might reduce the activities of human traffickers.

Sommer described the existing asylum system as ironic, asserting that it encourages misuse and does not contribute to controlling immigration, which harms both those seeking protection and the local community. He warned that internal security and social cohesion are threatened by this system, which favors young individuals who can afford the costs of fleeing, thereby hindering others.
