Germany/Israel

Germany has been exporting weapons worth nearly half a billion euros to Israel since October 2023.

According to the German Ministry of Economy's response to a query from the Left Party, weapons and military equipment valued at 485.1 million euros were permitted for delivery to Israel from October 7, 2023, to May 13, 2025. It remains unclear whether the new government, formed by the Christian coalition and the Social Democratic Party, has issued any new licenses since coming into power on May 6.

In related news, Germany's new Foreign Minister, Johan Vadivol, expressed skepticism in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung about issuing additional arms export licenses to Israel amid developments in Gaza. He confirmed that arms exports will be reviewed to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law.

It is worth noting that a legal case filed by Nicaragua before the International Court of Justice accuses Germany of complicity in the events in Gaza due to arms exports to Israel. Although the judges rejected an urgent request to halt deliveries, the case continues.

Ulrike Toden, a defense expert in the Left Party, called for an immediate halt to all arms shipments to Israel to avoid international legal responsibility.

Public opinion polls show that 58% of Germans support suspending arms supplies to Israel given the situation in Gaza, while 22% oppose it, and 19% have not expressed a position.
