Iran retracted its Damascus embassy reopening announcement following Assad's fall, signaling regime uncertainty.

Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani claimed Wednesday her embassy reopening statements were misinterpreted. She stated Iran's future decisions would depend on Syria's new leadership, per IRNA.

At her weekly briefing, Mohajerani acknowledged Syria's unclear situation, contradicting Tuesday's claim of ongoing embassy negotiations. Tehran lost a key ally and strategic corridor used for supplying Hezbollah.

Syrian forces captured Damascus December 8 after rapid advances forced Assad to flee to Russia, ending a 13-year civil war and 54-year Assad family rule. The Iranian embassy sustained minor damage before security stabilized.
