Iran's Supreme Leader Responds to Recent Developments in Lebanon
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, issued his first comments regarding the recent developments in Lebanon, condemning what he described as a "massacre" against Lebanese civilians in a statement.
The statement came following the Israeli military's announcement of the killing of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and other leaders in airstrikes targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday. So far, the Iran-backed group has not provided any clarification regarding the fate of its leader.
Khamenei's statement, which was reported by the Iranian news agency "Tasnim," also did not address the Israeli military's announcement.
Khamenei fiercely criticized the Israeli leadership, accusing them of "short-sightedness" and "foolish policies," asserting that the Israelis are "much too weak to inflict any significant damage on the strong foundation of Hezbollah in Lebanon."
He noted that Israel "has not learned from its criminal year-long war in Gaza," emphasizing that "the mass killing of women, children, and civilians will not affect the solid structure of the resistance front."
Khamenei reaffirmed Iran's support for Hezbollah, stating that "all resistance forces in the region stand by and support Hezbollah," adding that "the fate of this region will be determined by the resistance forces, led by Hezbollah."
Earlier on Saturday, two officials told Reuters that the Iranian Supreme Leader had been moved to a safe location within the country, with tightened security measures in place.
The officials, who are from the Middle East, stated that Iran is in continuous contact with the Lebanese Hezbollah group and other allied factions to determine the next step.
