Military coordination between Washington and Tokyo reflects strengthening of US alliances in region to counter growing Chinese influence
The United States is preparing plans to deploy military personnel in Japan and the Philippines in preparation for potential tension in Taiwan, Kyodo News Agency reported Sunday.
These plans will be included in preliminary joint operations strategy expected in December, according to sources familiar with Tokyo-Washington relations.
The plans include deploying a US Marine battalion equipped with mobile multiple-launch rocket systems along Nansei Islands, stretching from southern Kyushu to Yonaguni near Taiwan.
The agency reported that authorities will establish temporary bases on inhabited islands when a Taiwan crisis appears imminent.
Sources indicated the Japanese military's primary role will focus on providing logistical support, particularly fuel and ammunition.
The Chinese embassy in Manila announced it "took note" of information revealed by Kyodo.
Beijing seeks to develop its military capabilities while escalating pressure on Taiwan, which it considers part of its territory.
Washington has intensified regional alliances, provoking Beijing by conducting regular patrols of its ships and fighters in Taiwan Strait and South China Sea.
