Indonesia, Malaysia sign agreement to improve protection of migrant workers
The Zawya reported, citing Reuters, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob witnessed on Friday the signing of an agreement to improve protection for migrant workers following a meeting between the leaders in Jakarta.
Ismail Sabri said that the memorandum of understanding comes after concerns over the treatment of some Indonesian workers in Malaysia and will cover wages and allow workers to file complaints through a new application.
The Jakarta Post news website mentioned on February 6 that Indonesia and Malaysia had a bilateral agreement on the placement and protection of Indonesian domestic workers since 2006, which was renewed once in 2011 but expired in 2016.
First locally assembled electric vehicle launched in Indonesia
It noted that frequent cases of Indonesian workers being abused in Malaysia have resulted in diplomatic tensions and were one of the reasons why Indonesia passed the Migrant Worker Protection Law in 2017.
