Death of Taekwondo Champion Shahd Radwan in Traffic Accident in Damascus
Local sources in Sweida reported that the young woman, Shahd Radwan, who won the title of "Champion of the Republic" in Taekwondo several years ago, passed away after being involved in a traffic accident in the capital, Damascus, while heading to complete her registration procedures at the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
The "Sweida 24" network confirmed that Shahd, who was about 18 years old, was transferred to a hospital in Damascus after sustaining serious injuries from the accident, but she succumbed to her injuries. The worsening traffic situation is attributed to the increasing congestion in major cities like Damascus, along with the indiscriminate use of heavy transportation vehicles, such as trucks and bulldozers, which often lack necessary maintenance, raising the likelihood of breakdowns and accidents.
Additionally, the absence of strict laws related to traffic safety and weak oversight of drivers are among the other reasons. Traffic laws are often ignored, leading to dangerous behaviors such as speeding and non-compliance with traffic signals. The transport sector also suffers from inadequate driver training, making them unqualified to handle emergencies or traffic crises.
It is noteworthy that areas under the control of the Syrian regime witnessed 694 fatalities due to traffic accidents last year, of which 581 were males and 167 were females.
Shahd had achieved excellent results in her high school diploma this year and was hoping to enroll in the Faculty of Civil Engineering. Syria has seen a noticeable increase in the number of traffic accidents in recent years, leading to higher rates of injuries and fatalities. This increase is attributed to the deterioration of road infrastructure, in addition to a lack of maintenance and necessary updates to road networks.
