The End of the Assad Era: Opposition Control and Geopolitical Transformations in Syria
On the morning of Sunday, the Syrian capital Damascus witnessed a historic event as protests escalated with the entry of factions from the "Military Operations Management." This led to the official collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime. Subsequently, the opposition revitalized and took control of strategic coastal cities in Syria, such as Tartus and Latakia, dealing a significant blow to the regime's influence in coastal areas.
In a related context, factions of the Syrian National Army managed to seize the city of Manbij, located in eastern Aleppo's countryside, after violent clashes with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Ahmad al-Shara, the commander of the operations room, entered the Umayyad Mosque in downtown Damascus, where he was met with an enthusiastic reception from citizens celebrating this significant shift.
Militarily, Israeli airstrikes intensified on military sites in Quneitra and Daraa, targeting the regime's weapon warehouses and strategic centers. At the same time, U.S. forces carried out over 75 airstrikes targeting ISIS camps spread across central Syria. Israeli tanks also advanced into the Mount Hermon area, reflecting the rising military activities in the region.
In another development, Russia announced its reception of the Assad family “for humanitarian reasons,” possibly indicating their deteriorating situation. The European Union expressed its welcome for the regime's fall, stating it was ready to assist in rebuilding Syria after years of war and suffering. The United Nations Security Council held an emergency session to discuss the latest developments in the Syrian situation, while a group of unknown individuals set fire to the immigration and passports building in Damascus, underscoring the general state of chaos and instability. Additionally, the regime's flag was removed from the Syrian embassy in Moscow, indicating significant political repercussions casting shadows over the regime's standing in the international community.
Events in Syria are accelerating rapidly, heralding a new chapter in the country’s history, as the Syrian people strive to achieve their aspirations for freedom and justice after years of oppression and suffering.
