  • "Shoa" Organization Condemns Algerian Authorities' Neglect of Political Prisoners and Calls for Enhanced Human Rights

علم الجزائر

The "Shoa" organization expressed its deep condemnation of the Algerian authorities’ disregard for political prisoners and detainees of conscience, emphasizing its significant displeasure with the exclusion of these prisoners from the recent presidential pardon announced.

"Shoa" noted that the continued detention of new citizens on political charges by the Algerian authorities comes at a time when the Algerian people are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the liberation revolution, raising further concerns about the human rights situation in the country. This behavior, according to the organization, highlights the lack of any genuine intention from the authorities to improve the human rights situation and reflects the insincerity of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s call for a comprehensive national dialogue.

The organization considers these ongoing arrests as a blatant violation of the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Algerian constitution and international human rights treaties. It pointed out that these practices aim to suppress dissenting voices and intimidate activists and citizens who defend their rights and freedoms.

In light of this, "Shoa" called on the Algerian authorities to halt all forms of restrictions on public liberties and to end arbitrary arrests targeting activists and political opponents. It also demanded the immediate release of political prisoners and those detained for their opinions, stressing the importance of initiating a serious political dialogue that ensures the participation of all relevant parties in a genuine reform process.

"Shoa" affirmed the necessity for the Algerian government to adhere to human rights standards and to undertake meaningful reforms that enhance democracy and guarantee the people's rights to expression and assembly. The responsiveness of the authorities to these calls will reflect the seriousness of their commitment to improving the overall situation of rights and freedoms in the country.
