Human Rights Organization Calls for Saving 18 Hunger-Striking Detainees in Algeria
-
The Algerian authorities' silence towards the detainees' hunger strike reflects an escalating approach in ignoring the legitimate demands of political prisoners

Shua'a Human Rights Organization has issued an urgent appeal expressing serious concerns about the safety of 18 prisoners of conscience in Algerian prisons who have been continuing an open-ended hunger strike for eight days, protesting their prolonged preventive detention which has exceeded 13 months.
The organization clarified in a statement issued today that Algerian authorities continue to detain the prisoners in Al-Qulaya prison since October 12, 2023. Most of them are leaders of the banned "Islamic Salvation Front" party, arrested for issuing a statement on September 30, 2023, calling for lifting restrictions on political and journalistic activities, launching national dialogue, and releasing political detainees.
The organization revealed a serious deterioration in the health condition of the hunger strikers, especially since most of them are elderly and suffer from chronic diseases. They pointed out that the detainees are facing increasing pressure, including the transfer of three of them - Ahmed Al-Zawi, Garfa Badr Al-Din, and Ali Bin Hajar - to Al-Harrash prison on Monday evening, November 11, 2024.
In its statement, the organization called on Algerian authorities to take responsibility for the health and safety of the detainees, urging their immediate release and considering their continued detention a flagrant violation of human rights and freedom of expression.
