Egyptian Position Reflects Growing Concern About Syria's Potential Transformation into a Platform for Terrorist Operations Under Tahrir al-Sham's Rule

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Ati reviewed his country's concerns during the expanded Arab ministerial meeting in Riyadh about Syria potentially becoming a "center for terrorist groups".
The Egyptian minister emphasized the need to prevent harboring terrorist elements on Syrian territories, calling for international efforts to prevent Syria from becoming a source of regional instability.
Egyptian concerns became evident after the appearance of Mahmoud Fathy, convicted in the assassination of Egypt's Attorney General Hisham Barakat, alongside the Military Operations Management leader and Turkish Justice and Development Party advisor Yasin Aktay.
Egypt's aviation authorities imposed restrictions on Syrians entering from abroad, with Civil Aviation Authority head Amr El-Sharqawi explaining the decision mirrors procedures used with countries experiencing conflicts.
Egyptian communication with the new Syrian administration was delayed compared to other Arab countries, limited to a phone call between foreign ministers on December 31st.
Abdel-Ati condemned repeated Israeli strikes targeting infrastructure and military capabilities in Syria, along with Israeli incursions into buffer zones.
Egypt hosts over 150,000 Syrian refugees, 1.2 million Sudanese refugees since the April 2023 war, and over 100,000 Palestinians, according to official sources.
The Egyptian position calls for adopting a comprehensive political process with pure Syrian will, involving all Syrian community components and ensuring no political or social forces are marginalized, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
