Turkish artillery hits US outpost in Syria’s Kobani, no injuries reported
US troops in the vicinity of Kobani in northern Syria came under artillery fire from Turkish positions at approximately 9 pm local time, a statement from the Pentagon confirms.
“The explosion occurred within a few hundred meters of a location outside the Security Mechanism zone and in an area known by the Turks to have US forces present,” said Navy Captain Brook DeWalt, Director of Defense Press Operations at the Pentagon.
All US troops are accounted for with no injuries reported, according to DeWalt’s statement.
An explosion occurred near an outpost of US troops near Syria’s Kobani earlier on Friday, according to a US official. The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the source of the explosion near Kobani, Syria, was unclear but it came as Turkey wages an offensive in northeast Syria.
According to an Al Arabiya correspondent on the ground, Turkish artillery hit a coalition base in Kobani with reports of soldiers from the US and France being wounded.
