St. George Church in Bloudan, one of the most prominent religious sites in the region, was subjected to an attempted burning and bombing by unknown persons. The masked individuals poured a quantity of gasoline inside the church through a window after removing it.
Additionally, they threw two bombs inside the church. However, the fire was contained at the church window and did not spread to other areas inside, while the two bombs did not explode.
Following the incident, General Security closed roads leading to the church and began investigations to uncover those involved in this attack, amid a state of security alert.
This incident sparked widespread controversy on social media, where many commenters expressed concern about attempts to ignite sectarian strife in the country.
Among the comments published, some users indicated that the attack aims to sabotage efforts of coexistence between different Syrian components, citing what they described as the "hidden hand" moving these events.
Others accused opposition parties of transferring the conflict into churches and religious areas in an attempt to explode the situation internally.
On the opposite side, some objected to these accusations, asserting that other parties might be behind the incident, including General Security, questioning the timing of the attack which came at a time when Syria is witnessing tensions between various sectarian components.
Official investigations continue their attempts to reveal the identity of the perpetrators, but the varying statements on social media highlight the sharp division in public opinion about the incident, as everyone differs in interpreting the motives behind the act and its future dimensions on Syria's unity and stability.
