B-52's advanced nuclear and conventional capabilities make it an effective pressure tool in the intensifying confrontation between Washington and its allies against Tehran
The United States has begun strengthening its military presence in the Middle East by deploying B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers, in a move aimed at protecting Israel and sending a stern warning to Iran, as announced by the U.S. Central Command.
The Pentagon stated that the U.S. Defense Secretary "continues to say clearly that if Iran or its partners or affiliated groups exploit this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take all necessary measures to defend our people."
The B-52 bomber represents a real source of terror for Washington's adversaries, as it can fly with a payload of up to 31,500 kilograms and has an operational range exceeding 14,000 kilometers without aerial refueling. It can carry nuclear warheads on twelve advanced AGM-129 cruise missiles and twenty AGM-86A cruise missiles.
These reinforcements coincide with fiery statements from Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who threatened a "harsh response" to what he described as Washington and the "Zionist entity's" aggression against Tehran and the resistance axis, during a speech to students in the Iranian capital.
The confrontation between Israel, Washington's main ally, and Iran and its regional allies has intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023, with Tel Aviv facing threats from Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah.
The American bomber is distinguished by its ability to perform various conventional missions through a comprehensive arsenal including AGM-84 Harpoon missiles, Joint Direct Attack Munitions, and AGM-142 Raptor missiles, along with additional cockpit windows to protect its crew from nuclear flash.
The U.S. Air Force plans to upgrade its fleet of 76 B-52 bombers with hypersonic missiles and advanced electronic equipment, keeping them in service until the 2050s, making them among the longest-serving military aircraft in U.S. military history.
These strategic bombers have maintained a prominent presence in U.S. military conflicts, from the Vietnam War through the Kuwait War and Afghanistan, up to the war against ISIS in Syria.
