Syrian Observatory: 412 Killed in Northern Syria Battles

Intensive Russian airstrikes on multiple areas indicate Moscow's attempt to regain military initiative for Syrian regime

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed Sunday evening that the death toll from armed attacks in northern Syria has risen to 412 casualties, including 61 civilians.
The human losses were distributed among 214 killed from faction ranks, 137 from Syrian regime forces and their supporters, and 61 civilians, including 17 who fell today.
The Observatory reported through its official Facebook platform that Russian aviation executed intensive raids on Aleppo, one of which claimed 12 lives, including 8 civilians.
Russian airstrikes heavily targeted Idlib city and areas of northern and southern Hama countryside.
Armed militias, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Al-Nusra Front), have managed since Wednesday to sweep through villages and towns in regime-controlled Aleppo province.
Syrian regime forces had regained control of all of Aleppo in late 2016 with Russian and Iranian support and allied groups, while faction fighters agreed to withdraw after months of bombing and siege in a battle that changed the course of events.
Mustafa Abdul Jaber, one of the armed militia leaders, attributed the rapid advance to the limited Iranian-backed elements in the province.
The Syrian regime announced Sunday the recovery of several towns that armed groups had controlled during the past few days.
Syrian regime President Bashar al-Assad affirmed that "terrorism understands only the language of force," adding that "terrorists represent neither people nor institutions, they only represent the agencies that employ and support them."
