Sudanese Army Recaptures Wad Madani: Potential Turning Point in Sudanese War
-
Sudanese Army's Entry into Wad Madani Represents a Strategic Shift in Military Power Balance and Opportunity to Improve Humanitarian Situation

The Sudanese Army achieved a strategic breakthrough by entering Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira State and its primary commercial and agricultural center, marking its largest military victory since the war erupted nearly two years ago.
Recorded footage shared by the army showed its troops inside the city, which had remained under Rapid Support Forces control since December 2023. The Armed Forces Leadership issued a statement confirming: "We congratulate our generous people on our forces entering Wad Madani this morning, and they are now clearing rebel pockets within the city."
Spontaneous celebrations and demonstrations swept several Sudanese cities, rejoicing in the recapture of this strategic city, which transformed from a thriving commercial and agricultural center to an area facing potential famine due to conflict-induced blockade.
The defection of the Rapid Support Forces commander in Gezira State and his joining the army in October represented a turning point, with his forces participating in the city's liberation. The army had intensified its campaign to regain control of the state in recent months after establishing influence over the neighboring Sennar State.
Observers view the potential full recapture of Gezira State as a potential turning point in the ongoing war since April 2023, which has caused one of the world's most significant humanitarian crises, especially with continued violent fighting in White Nile State in southern Sudan.
