Russia Develops Parachute to make Service Dogs Fly Out of Plane

According to the India Today, Russia is testing whether dogs can fly out of a plane with a parachute in areas where it is not possible for helicopters or planes to land.

Footages from the first test landing are going crazy viral on social media. Technodinamika, a part of the Rostec State Corporation, has developed parachutes that can drop a person along with a service dog in places where landing a plane or helicopter is not an option.

Indis Today reported that Technodinamika said on Tuesday that it was in the final stages of testing this newly-developed device. Footage broadcast on state media showed a German Shephard diving from a plane flying at a height of 13,000 feet.

"Four-legged law enforcement officers are often involved in military and rescue operations, but sometimes it takes too long to reach the destination on foot and it’s impossible to land by helicopter or plane,” the company said in a press release.

The parachute harness developed by Technodinamika is designed for both single and tandem jumps.

The test subjects “felt good” after landing, according to a report in The Moscow Times. Test parachutist Andrei Toropkov said that initially, the dogs get a little tense when the plane door is opened, but they eventually calm down.

“The animals get tense when the door opens and there’s wind and noise, but they calm down thanks to the dog handler. It’s more difficult without them,” the news portal quoted Toropkov as saying.

The manufacturers added that they are working on doubling the maximum altitude for dog parachute jumps to 8,000 meters. The tests are expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
