The Ministry of Defence in Poland announced in Warsaw on Monday (Sep 26), the Polish Army is to offer a one-day basic training course to all its citizens aged between 18 and 65.

According to the announcement, only Polish citizens will be eligible. The course is to include weapons handling, shooting, close combat and map reading and will be held at 17 army bases on Saturdays in October and November, it said.

This comes as the war in Ukraine had lent increased urgency to longstanding plans to increase the size of the Polish military, the announcement added.

Voluntary military service has recently been introduced and employees of the postal service have been urged to to undergo weapons training with the country's Territorial Defence Force (WOT).

The Polish military currently numbers 110,000, with an additional 30,000 men and women in the (WOT).

The Polish government has been a staunch ally of Mr Zelensky. It has sent hundreds of Soviet-era tanks and other armaments to Ukraine and encouraged the European Union to introduce tougher sanctions against Russia.

Some 6 million Ukrainian refuges have crossed over to Poland – a fellow former Eastern bloc country bordering Russia – since Moscow launched the war on Feb. 24.
