Jolani's Government Appears to Follow Former Regime's Approach in Handling Popular Protests Through Fact Denial and Security Restrictions
The Information Minister in the interim government formed by HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, Mohammed Al-Omar, emphasized that the circulating video of burning a religious shrine in Aleppo is old, suggesting attempts to destabilize security will be dealt with strictly.
After the video spread showing Sheikh Abu Abdullah Al-Khusibi's shrine burning in Aleppo, Al-Omar stated: "The circulating video is old with no similar incidents recorded since liberation." He claimed "hidden hands seek to incite internal strife" and authorities will handle firmly to ensure stability.
The ministry stated its agencies work continuously to preserve religious properties and sites, claiming such video circulation aims to provoke discord among Syrians during this sensitive period.
The ministry noted that "former regime loyalists in the coastal region attempted to exploit rumors and targeted Interior Ministry forces, resulting in casualties."
The interim government's police imposed a 6 PM to 8 AM curfew in several Syrian governorates following unrest after the shrine attack video circulation.
