Italian authorities told AFP on Friday (Sep 16) At least seven people died when violent storms lashed central Italy and flooded roads and homes.

The AGI news agency said, three people were missing, including a six-year-old child travelling in a car. The mother was rescued but the child was washed away by the floodwaters.

“According to the local prefecture, the provisional death toll is seven. The seventh body has just been found,” a civil protection agency spokesman said, confirming reports in the local media.

The worst hit area was Ancona, a port city on the Adriatic, where several areas were without electricity or telephone connections. Schools were closed Friday in the affected zones, Reuters reported, the al-Arabiya English said.

The storms also lashed neighboring Umbria, according to the report.

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas), which produces heat-trapping gases, the United Nations said.
