The Israeli Security Cabinet is holding a crucial meeting on Thursday evening to discuss the response to the Iranian missile attack that occurred on October 1st.
According to informed sources speaking to the American newspaper "New York Times," the council is expected to give the green light to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to launch a retaliatory attack against Iran.
The American website "Axios" revealed that the meeting will witness voting on "a major military action against Iran." The site quoted Israeli officials saying that the expected retaliation will be wide-ranging, and is likely to include a mix of airstrikes on military targets in Iran and covert operations, similar to those that recently targeted Hamas leaders.
In a notable statement, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that "the strike on Iran will be lethal, precise, and surprising," indicating the seriousness of Israeli intentions in responding to the Iranian attack.
In a related context, Netanyahu held a phone call with US President Joe Biden on Wednesday, in an attempt to outline the limits of the Israeli response. An aide to Netanyahu confirmed that once the decision to strike Iran is made, the Israeli Prime Minister will be keen to inform Biden of the details.
This development comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, raising fears of a direct military confrontation between the two parties. It appears that Israel is seeking to deliver a strong blow to Iran, while ensuring American support and avoiding an uncalculated escalation that could lead to a full-scale regional war.
