The horrific statistics of sectarian violence victims reveal the new authorities' failure to protect citizens and apply law fairly

Violence has escalated in Syria, with Homs and Hama governorates witnessing new murders, while official statistics revealed 122 victims in liquidation operations since the beginning of the year.
Local sources reported the killing of a citizen in Jabourin village in rural Homs by elements of the Authority, while a young man was kidnapped and killed in Al-Midaan neighborhood in Maharda.
Homs recorded the highest death toll with 50 people, 49 of whom were killed on sectarian grounds, followed by Hama with 28 victims, including 24 for sectarian motives.
Reports confirmed that sectarian violence extended to Latakia and Tartous, where 20 killings were recorded, all with sectarian motives, while Damascus and its countryside recorded 17 cases without sectarian backgrounds.
Legal experts stressed the need to activate the role of independent judiciary and form investigation committees into sectarian murders, calling for the application of transitional justice principles.
Observers warned of the danger of continued violence on civil peace, demanding the formation of national reconciliation committees and activation of security and judicial institutions' roles.
Political analysts confirmed that these crimes affirm the urgent need to implement a system that guarantees the rights of all Syrian components and protects societal diversity.
