US Airstrikes Target 9 Iranian Militia Sites in Syria

Continuing exchange of strikes between US forces and pro-Iran groups reflects Syria's transformation into a regional score-settling arena
US forces initiated military attacks on Monday, targeting nine centers belonging to Tehran-backed groups in Syrian territory, following attacks on their personnel in Syria, according to the US military.
The US Central Command for the Middle East (CENTCOM) stated on social media that the attacks hit two locations, in retaliation for a series of attacks on US military personnel in Syria during the previous day.
They added: "These strikes will degrade the ability of Iran-backed groups to plan and conduct future attacks against US and Coalition forces," referring to the international coalition against ISIS.
CENTCOM did not disclose the identity of the targeted groups or the human casualties resulting from the airstrikes.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed that four pro-Iran militia members were killed as a result of the strikes.
The United States maintains a military force of 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 others in Iraq as part of the international coalition established in 2014 to defeat ISIS.
Since the outbreak of confrontations in Gaza on October 7, 2023, US forces in Iraq and Syria have faced frequent attacks from Iran-allied groups, in response to US support for Tel Aviv, with Washington retaliating by striking Tehran-affiliated targets.
Washington has reinforced its military presence in the region with naval vessels and fighter aircraft since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict, seeking to deter Iran and its allies. US forces also helped intercept missiles launched by Tehran toward Israel earlier this year.
