Ukrainian president proposes extending martial law, general mobilization

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday (August 13) proposed to the parliament to prolong the current martial law and general mobilization in the country for another 90 days, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported, according to the Xinhua.

The parliament's website said that two separate drafts on extending the martial law and general mobilization have been submitted to the parliament for consideration.

The relevant draft bills were registered under No. 7664 and No. 7665 respectively, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

The texts of the draft bills and accompanying documents have not yet been made public, according to Kyiv post.

The Ukrainian parliament imposed a martial law after the start of the conflict with Russia on Feb. 24 and extended it three times since then.

The general mobilization of the population was introduced in Ukraine on Feb. 24 and was prolonged in May for another three months.

On May 22, 2022, at the initiative of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine extended martial law and general mobilization for a period of 90 days, until August 23, 2022.
