Syrian Army Launches "Counteroffensive" in Hama Province

The Syrian army is launching a "counteroffensive" in Hama province in central Syria, during which it has managed to push back armed factions that had made significant advances in the northern part of the country following an attack that began last week, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Wednesday.

The Observatory stated that "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" and allied factions "failed to control Mount Zain al-Abidin near Hama city despite fierce battles" with Syrian army forces, which launched a counterattack after midnight on Tuesday-Wednesday, supported by aerial strikes. This enabled the army to push the factions "about 10 kilometers away from Hama city."

Syrian army units continue to strike the gatherings of armed factions in northern Hama countryside, according to the SANA news agency. The agency clarified that the Syrian army is targeting the positions of armed factions and their movement axes, noting that several militants were neutralized and their military equipment destroyed.

For its part, the General Authority for Radio and Television in Syria reported that the Syrian air force, with support from Russian air forces, has killed over 1,600 militants in Syria this week.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Wednesday that over 600 people have been killed due to the escalation in Syria between militants and government forces.

According to the Observatory, 605 individuals were killed, including 107 civilians, pointing out that 299 were from the armed factions, and 199 were from government forces and their allies.

It indicated that "military reinforcements for regime forces arrived at the northern, eastern, and western axes of Hama countryside, in addition to local militants from the villages reaching the outskirts of Hama city." It explained that "the armed factions seized control of al-Samaqiyat, Kafr Ra’a, Mareshuhur, Maardas, the school of the mechanized units, which is considered a stronghold for the 25th Division, the 87th Brigade, and the Batish checkpoint, as well as the Rahbat Khattab."

Since November 27, "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" and allied armed factions have been conducting a surprise attack in northwestern Syria. These forces have taken control of dozens of towns and a significant portion of Aleppo, Syria's second-largest city, and continue their advance to the south.
