G20 Summit in Brazil to Address Climate Change and Diplomatic Tensions

The G20 summit in Brazil this week will discuss several key topics, including the diplomatic tensions surrounding global warming. This comes after negotiators at UN talks in Azerbaijan reached an impasse over climate financing.
Negotiators hope that leaders of the world's twenty largest economies will pave the way for renewed funding, according to a report from Reuters.
Leaders of the G20 countries are set to arrive in Rio de Janeiro today, with the summit scheduled for tomorrow and the day after. They will address a range of issues, from poverty and hunger to global institutional reform, as the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) highlights their efforts to tackle global warming.
While COP29, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, is tasked with agreeing on the allocation of hundreds of billions of dollars for projects aimed at combating climate change, it will be the G20 leaders meeting in Rio who hold the reins of power.
The G20 represents 85% of the world's economy and is the largest contributor to multilateral development banks that help direct climate financing. The group is also responsible for over three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Just days ago, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated during COP29, "All countries must play their part, but the G20 must lead the efforts, as they are the largest emitters and have the greatest capacities and responsibilities."
Reaching such an agreement may become more challenging with the return of President-elect Donald Trump to power, as he is reportedly preparing to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement once again.
