Targeting Main Hospital in El Fasher Represents Dangerous Escalation in Sudanese Conflict Threatening Humanitarian Situation Deterioration Throughout Region
Violent attack Friday targeted main hospital in El Fasher, western Sudan, killing 9 and wounding 20 others including patients and companions, causing medical facility shutdown.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted via "X" platform Saturday "yesterday's attack toll on main hospital in El Fasher, Sudan," condemning "continuing attacks on health facilities" in country.
UN official urged "protecting all patients and health workers, stopping all attacks on health institutions and surroundings."
Doctor, requesting anonymity for security reasons, reviewed complete hospital activities stoppage Saturday, explaining attack targeted "patient families' gathering areas and hospital main facilities."
El Fasher "Resistance Committee Coordination," one of Sudan's aid coordinating volunteer groups, reported raids "destroying hospital wards, pharmacies, and operating room."
Sudan witnessing conflict since April 2023 between army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

RSF imposing siege on El Fasher, North Darfur capital, since last May. Darfur houses quarter of Sudan's population, with over half region's 10 million inhabitants displaced.
RSF dominates most region, controlling vast South Kordofan and central Sudan areas, while army extends influence north and east. Both sides accused of randomly targeting civilians and deliberately shelling residential areas.
UN-backed July report revealed famine spreading to large North Darfur refugee camp due to RSF siege disrupting trade and aid delivery. Conflict intensifying with both sides increasing populated areas strikes recent weeks, without near solution signs.
