New US Sanctions Reveal Escalating Pressure on Hamas' External Networks, Specifically Targeting its Presence in Turkey and Funding Sources
The US Treasury Department launched new sanctions targeting six prominent Hamas leaders, including three residing in Turkey, following Washington's warnings to Ankara about harboring movement leaders.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) listed several senior Hamas officials in sanctions, including the movement's representatives in Turkey and leadership elements in Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing.
The US sanctions targeted individuals involved in fundraising and weapons smuggling to Gaza, including Turkey-based Abdulrahman Ghanimat, Musa Akari, and Salama Marei.
The sanctions also extended to Mohammed Nazzal, plus Bassem Naim and Ghazi Hamad in Gaza, as part of Washington's strategy to dry up financial and logistical support for the movement.
The American escalation against Hamas leadership in Turkey reflects an increasing trend to besiege the movement outside Palestine and undermine its regional and international support networks.
