The Republic World reported that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized the Cuban government amid some of the biggest displays of anti government sentiment in decades. basic needs

Cuba is going through its worst economic crisis in decades, along with a resurgence of coronavirus cases, as it suffers the consequences of U.S. sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump’s administration.

Large contingents of Cuban police patrolled the capital of Havana on Monday following protests around the island nation against food shortages and high prices amid the coronavirus crisis.

Blinken said: "The protesters called for freedom and human rights."

The Republic World reported, citing him as saying: "They criticized Cuba's authoritarian regime for failing to meet people's most basic needs, including food and medicine. In many instances, peaceful protesters were met with repression and violence."

"Peaceful protesters are not criminals, and we join partners across the hemisphere and around the world in urging the Cuban regime to respect the rights of the Cuban people to determine their own future, something they have been denied for far too long," Blinken added.

Blinken also spoke out about the situation in Haiti, following last week's assassination of its president.

"We urge the country's political leaders to bring the country together around a more inclusive, peaceful and secure vision and pave the road toward free and fair elections this year," he said. basic needs
