UN Investigates Human Rights Violations in Syria… Damascus Welcomes It

The United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva voted on Friday on a resolution aimed at investigating violations and improving the human rights record in Syria, following a 13-year civil war during the rule of former president Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian government welcomed this resolution upon its issuance.
The resolution received no opposition during the council vote and calls on the new Syrian government to support investigations into the crimes committed during the conflict that erupted in 2011.
This decision reflects the support of the 47 member states of the council for the new Syrian government and its efforts to improve the human rights situation in the country.
Haydar Ali Ahmad, Syria's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, stated before the council: "Syria considers the draft resolution positive and regards it as balanced... We appreciate the support and assistance received from many friendly countries that have expressed their willingness to cooperate with the Syrian government, which forms a strong incentive to continue the path of reforms and achieve the aspirations of the Syrian people towards peace, stability, and development."
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani also commented in a statement posted on the "X" platform: "We take pride in Syria's positive and constructive participation for the first time in the formulation of this resolution."
Council members welcomed Syria's participation and urged it to adhere to the commitments of the resolution, including the formation of a committee to investigate serious crimes since the beginning of the war.
In a related context, the British ambassador to the UN, Simon Manley, stated that the deaths of hundreds of civilians in the Syrian coastal region during March was a "tragic reminder of the deep wounds" left by the conflict, underscoring the urgent need for justice and accountability.
