UN chief Antonio Guterres urges EU to fight for values of “enlightenment”
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

According to We For News, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres asked the European Union to fight for values of “enlightenment” against populism, racism and other intolerant ideas during his visit to Brussels on Wednesday. UN chief

In his visit to meet the college of the European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, Antonio Guterres said: “As a European, I’m particularly proud with the contribution that I consider the most important contribution of Europe to global civilization — and that is in my opinion, the Enlightenment, the values of the Enlightenment.

We For News reported, citing Xinhua that Guterres said at a press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen "the primacy of reason, tolerance." UN chief

Enlightenment is a European intellectual movement of the 17th and 18th centuries in which ideas concerning God, reason, nature, and humanity were synthesized into a worldview that gained wide assent in the West and that instigated revolutionary developments in art, philosophy, and politics.

According to We For News Guterres, former prime minister of Portugal, said “this is particularly important when we see the risks of moving into a kind of post-Enlightenment era and where we see the multiplication of different forms of irrationality — nationalism, populism, racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim hatred.”

He added that the EU will be at the forefront of the good battle for the values of the Enlightenment, which were the very important contribution of Europe to global civilization. UN chief
