Turkish Shelling Claims Life of Regime Officer in Rural Manbij
-
The Turkish attack on rural Manbij appears to be a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement, raising questions about Turkey's commitment to international agreements in the region
A Sky News Arabia correspondent reported on Tuesday that a lieutenant in the Syrian regime forces was killed and several other personnel were wounded as a result of a Turkish attack targeting rural Manbij in northern Syria.
The Manbij Military Council, operating under the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), issued a statement explaining that Turkish forces and allied armed groups launched an attack using heavy artillery on villages surrounding Manbij.
The statement indicated that the attack focused on the populated village of Arab Hassan, located northwest of Manbij, which was subjected to a barrage of 17 mortar and artillery shells, in addition to 10 Grad rockets.
The strikes hit a position where Syrian regime forces were stationed in the area as part of the ceasefire agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and Turkey.
The Turkish attack constitutes a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement, and this development raises questions about Ankara's commitment to international agreements in the region. It also threatens to undermine the fragile stability in northern Syria.
Targeting Syrian regime positions in Manbij could lead to a shift in the balance of power on the ground and open the door to the possibility of wider military escalation in the region. The question remains how the concerned parties will respond to this serious development, and whether it will lead to a new round of military confrontations in northern Syria.
