Tur-backed forces continue their advance in northern Syria
A source in the Turkish Ministry of Defense reported today, Thursday, that the Syrian opposition forces supported by Turkey continue to advance "to cleanse northern Syria of terrorism," highlighting the ongoing battle against a Kurdish armed group in the region.
The source explained that Turkey has repeatedly affirmed to the United States that "a terrorist organization cannot be defeated by using another terrorist organization," referring to American support for the Syrian Democratic Forces in the conflict against ISIS.
The Syrian Democratic Forces are an armed coalition led by Kurds, which Ankara classifies as a terrorist organization.
Additionally, it is noteworthy that the capital Damascus has come under the control of the "Military Operations Administration" since last Saturday, as former President Bashar al-Assad fell at dawn on December 8, 2024.
The Military Operations Administration, led by Ahmad al-Shar’ , is swiftly asserting its authority over the country, having successfully deployed police and appointed a provisional government within a few days. They have also conducted meetings with foreign representatives, raising questions about the commitment of the new rulers in Damascus to the principle of inclusivity.
Since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad by the "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" under the leadership of al-Shar’, supported by a coalition of opposition factions, the officials who managed an Islamic administration in northwestern Syria have moved to the capital Damascus to take positions in the new government.
