Trump.. iders Appointing a Special Envoy for Ukraine
ترامب وزيلنسكي

As the formation of his new administration accelerates, President-elect Donald Trump appears to be contemplating the appointment of a special envoy to oversee the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with former intelligence director Richard Grenell being a potential choice for the position.

According to four sources familiar with the transition plans, Richard Grenell, who served as the Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s previous administration, is among the names being considered for this role. While there is currently no special envoy assigned to address the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, Trump is seriously considering the establishment of this position.

However, the sources indicate that Trump may ultimately reconsider this idea, exploring alternative options for who might fill the role, with no guarantee that Grenell would accept the position if offered.

If Grenell were to accept the appointment, he is expected to play a prominent role in efforts to resolve the conflict, leveraging his previous experience as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany and as Acting Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s tenure from 2017 to 2021.

Nevertheless, some of Grenell's views might be contentious among Ukrainian leaders. In July, during a roundtable discussion organized by Bloomberg, he advocated for the establishment of "self-governing regions" as a means to resolve the conflict that emerged following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He also expressed hesitations regarding Ukraine's NATO membership in the near future, a position that aligns with that of many of Trump’s allies.

Grenell's supporters highlight his extensive diplomatic experience and in-depth knowledge of European affairs. In addition to his ambassadorship in Germany, he has also served as a special presidential envoy for peace negotiations in Serbia and Kosovo.

It is worth noting that the Republican candidate has repeatedly pledged during his campaign to end the Russian-Ukrainian war within days, despite not specifying how he intends to accomplish that.
